Wanted OGW surrenders in Kulgam
Srinagar: The surrender offer of the security forces seems to be working as one of the most wanted over ground worker (OGW) of militants has surrendered before Army in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.
Altaf Sheikh of Qaimoh in Kulgam was a close confidante of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba militants operating in the area, sources said.
“Altaf has surrendered before Army. He was not a listed militant but he was a close confidante of HM and LeT militants operating in Qaimooh belt of Kulgam district,” a senior official said.
Sheikh, a well-known stone pelter, was involved in weapon snatching of a police constable Zahid Ali on September 11, 2015.
He was activated as an OGW by Hizb Militant Dawood Sheikh of Qaimooh who was killed on March 6, 2016. Two days before Dawood’s killing, Sheikh was arrested by police. However, he again got activated on November 25, 2016 as an OGW.
Before Sheikh, two militants – one of them Majid Khan, an ace footballer – returned home following an emotional appeal by their parents.
Army, Jammu Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force in September jointly offered Kashmiri militants to surrender. Even, they also offered to reward those who help in the surrender of militants. “Officers who help in the surrender of militants will be rewarded,” IGP Kashmir Munir Khan told reporters.
