Kashmir not in the list of most drug affected states
Baramulla: There are 70 million drug addicts across India but Kashmir was not in the list of most drug affected states as yet, according to a data provided by the union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
“India has more than 70 million drug addicts and there are ten suicides on a daily basis due to drug abuse”, Prof Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo, head of department Physics government degree college Baramulla (GDCB) said quoting the union ministry of social justice and empowerment.
However, Kashmir right now isn’t in the list of most drug affected states but the consumption of drugs in increasing on an alarming rate in the valley,” Professor Chalkoo said in his key note address at a talk show on the topic ‘drug addition – what we are doing? – in GDCB today.
He informed the audience about the ill effects of drug use and its impact on drug addicts, family and society in particular.
The talk show was organised by Baramulla-based news organisation “The Varmul Post” and “prestige advertisers” Sopore in collaboration with GDCB.
An interactive session was held where in representatives from police, law, health, education, civil society, religious institutions were made to answer the queries posed by guests, students and members of civil society.
A short skit on drug abuse was also presented by the students of GDC Baramulla highlighting the hazardous effects of drug abuse on the society.
The Director North Campus University of Kashmir Dr. Irshad Ahmad Wani, SSP Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, Principal GDC Baramulla Professor Beigh, Social Welfare Officer Mudassir Ahmad (K.A.S), M S Baramulla Hospital Syed Masood, Dr. Rouf Member of Idarah Fallahudarien Baramulla, Sheikh Aamir Lawyer Baramulla Court and other dignitaries were also present.
Students from Shah Rasool Memorial Welkin Sopore, Sanctorum Institutes of Education Sopore, University of Kashmir North Campus, GDC Baramulla participated in the program.
An award ceremony was observed at the end of program.
