Srinagar: A special court of the National Investigating Agency (NIA) New Delhi today extended judicial remand of Syed Shahid Yousuf till December 22. Shahid, is the son of  Hizbul Mujahideen Supremo Syed Salahuddin. He has been arrested on October 24, in an alleged Hawala funding case.

Shahid was produced before a judge at the Patlia house court complex today after the expiry of the previous remand. The judge extended the judicial remand till December 22.

Shahid, who is being questioned by the NIA since August 24, was asked to appear before the investigating body on October 24 and formally arrested. Initially, he was under the custody of NIA but was remanded to judicial custody till today (November 27). He has been lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Meanwhile, a delegation of prominent citizens of Soibug, the native place of Shahid, today strongly protested against the alleged  “murderous” attack on Shahid inside the jail.

“The jail authorities  in violation of the law harassed and  beat up Shahid inside the jail for more than an hour between 8 to 9 PM on November 21. He has suffered head and leg injuries and marks of violence are visible on his back”, the delegation said.

They said that even lawyer of Shahid was denied any audience by the jail authorities on November 21 because he had suffered multiple injuries. However, next day, the lawyer was allowed to meet him. Shahid narrated the entire episode to the lawyer and handed over  a blood-soaked  under-wear to him as a proof of the murderous attack on him”, the delegation alleged.

The delegation appealed to the authorities to transfer the case of Shahid to Srinagar to allow him to meet his nine-year-old son, Syed Miftah, a specially abled son as he has great attachment with his father.

They also cautioned the authorities not to harm Shahid.

“If anything untoward happens to him in jail it will have serious consequences and government will be squarely held responsible,” the delegation added. (Kashmir Wire)
