Srinagar: Three people including two women were injured in clashes between protesters and government forces after forces initiated a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday.

According to the reports, the clashes erupted after the forces laid a siege to Shukr -udin Mohalla of the Hajin town following the inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

Soon after the troops belonging to the Army’s 13 RR, cops from J&K police’s special operations group (SOG) and CRPF personnel of 45 battalion initiated a search operation and were carrying out searches in the adjacent Bane Mohalla Hajin, people came out of their homes and staged protests.

“People in hundreds including women and youth came out on roads against the presence of government forces in the area. Protests erupted and forces fired pellets injuring two ladies. The injured ladies were treated at a local health facility,” eyewitness said.

“Two women Saleema and Mubeena were hit by pellets during the clashes. They were shifted to Community Health Centre Hajin for treatment,” they added. They said that another youth was also hit however, the pellets injured his arms and a shoulder.

Eyewitness said that at least eight people received minor injuries during the clashes and all of them were treated at a local hospital.

“They were discharged after first aid was given to them,” said an employee of the hospital.

An official said that CASO was initiated in the area after ‘specific inputs’ about the presence of three militants in the area.

As the protests intensified, the forces called off the anti-militancy operation. However, the police said that CASO was called off as no contact was established with the militants.

The locals alleged that forces damaged the public property and set fire to the dry grass meant for domestic animals in the locality.

Meanwhile, the police had denied the use of pellets on the protesters.
