Kupwara ops continue for third day

Srinagar: Massive search operation continued for the third consecutive day on Friday in the forest area in the frontier district of Kupwara, where four militants, including an infiltrator, were killed in two different encounters.

“Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) continued for the third day in the forest area in the frontier district of Kupwara,” Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said Friday afternoon.

He said with the first light this morning, security forces resumed search operation in the woods near the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector, where a major infiltration bid was foiled by the troops on Wednesday.

“We are conducting massive search operation in the entire woods near the LoC in the sector, where a group of militants was noticed sneaking into this side.

The operation was stopped late last night to avoid any casualty,” he said, adding that all area was sealed to foil any attempt by militants to escape.

Pertinently, one soldier was also killed while foiling the infiltration bid and two other soldiers sustained injuries. A militant was also believed to be killed in the gunfight.

The spokesman said that forces today recovered the body of an unidentified militant killed in an infiltration bid foiled.

The body of the militant was recovered during search operations, a police official said, adding, it was handed over to local auqaf committee for last rites.

The forces recovered one AK rifle, one UBGL, six UBGL grenades, three AK magazines and 126 rounds from the spot where the body of the militant was found, the official said.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani militant belonging to the LeT was arrested during a naka laid in north Kashmir’s Handwara area, police sources said.

They said that the said militant was carrying an AK 47 assault rifle and some ammunition when he was caught on Friday evening.
