Militant, soldier killed as infiltration bid foiled in Keran sector: Army

Srinagar: A militant and a soldier were killed in a gunfight along the  Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.

Army’s Srinagar based defence spokesperson said that soldiers manning the fence near Chunkun post intercepted a group of infiltrators today afternoon.

“A militant and a trooper have been killed in an ongoing operation so far”, the spokesman said, adding that two more soldiers suffered bullet wounds and have been hospitalized.

Earlier, official sources said that army soldiers of 9 SIKH Li were patrolling near Chunkan Post in Keran sector and they came under barrage of fire from militants believed to be infiltrators at about 1:45 pm.

The army men also retaliated and in the exchange of fire, one soldier Mandeep Singh of 9 Sikh LI sustained grievous injuries. He was shifted to Military hospital Drugmulla where doctors declared him brought dead.

Sources say there could be more injuries to the soldiers.

Meanwhile, additional reinforcements of army’s Para troopers have been rushed to the firing spot and massive searches are underway.
