Shopian: As the Power Development Department (PDD) continues to haunt people through unscheduled power cuts, residents of Keegam village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district Monday staged a protest against the department, demanding immediate redressal of their genuine grievances.

Inhabitants including men, women and children took to the streets and blocked the main Pulwama-Shopian road as a mark of protest against PDD, who they said have failed to provide adequate electricity to them.

The blockade of the road by the protesters resulted in a huge traffic mess during which hundreds of vehicles were seen stranded on the road for hours.

The protesting residents informed ‘Kashmir Vision’ that the PDD is subjecting them to unscheduled power cuts during the harsh winter days.

They said that they are being forced to face tremendous hardships due to the non-availability of electricity in their areas.

“The authorities have miserably failed to provide us adequate electricity. There is no schedule followed by the PDD. The authorities must provide adequate electricity to them,” they said, adding that the PDD is providing electricity for couple of hours to them, that too at odd hours.

Protesters said that since the Darbar move, PDD has failed to provide them adequate electricity.

“It has become a norm now to push people towards the wall after the Darbar move,” they said, adding that the Minister concerned should look into the issues faced by the people so that they could heave a sigh of relief.

The protesters later appealed PDD higher ups to look into the matter and redress their genuine grievances at the earliest. The protestors later dispersed after persuasion by police and other officials.
