Hundreds turn out to attend last rites of slain militant
Srinagar: Scores of people on Saturday attended the funeral of slain militant Mugees Ahmad Mir in the outskirts of Srinagar city at Parimpora. Despite restriction put in place by authorities and bad weather, people assembled in hundreds to attend the funeral prayers of the slain Gazwat ul Hind militant.
Mir, who was killed in a brief encounter in Zakoora area of Srinagar, was initially associated with TeM and later termed to be a recruit of Zakir Musa’s Guzwat-ul-Hind.
According to the reports, Mugees Ahmad Mir had joined Al-Qaida’s offshoot Gazwat ul Hind and was working under the direct command of Zakir Musa. However, he was finally claimed to be the member by Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen.
Police sources said that Mir was hit by a bullet that slain Assistant Sub Inspector Imran Tak had fired at him at the encounter site. Tak was also killed in the encounter with the militants.
The sources said that a group of militants fired upon a police party that was on way to Zakura resulting in injuries of two policemen including Sub-Inspector Imran Ahmed and constable Suhail Ahmed.
Imran Ahmed succumbed to his injuries while the wounded constable is undergoing treatment at a local hospital here, police said.
During the attack, the slain cop is reported to have fired several shots from his service pistol which resulted in injuries to Mugees Ahmad Mir.
Police sources said that soon after the attack, locals recovered the body of Mugees who might have tried to escape after getting injured in the shootout at Zakura.
Meanwhile, people at the funeral were shouting anti-India, pro Zakir Musa slogans. Later, the people dispersed peacefully after paying homage to the militant.
Earlier, Police had put restrictions on the roads leading to the Parimpora . However, the government forces allowed the people to offer the prayers. The area also witnessed a complete shutdown with shops and all business establishments closed for the day.
The authorities last night imposed restrictions in areas falling under eight police stations in Srinagar. It included Parimpora, Safa Kadal, M.R.Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Maisuma and Kralkhud belts. They also ordered closure of all the schools and colleges for the day, barring the examinations.
Pertinently, the authorities also arrested JKLF leader Yasin Malik from his residence and sent him to the Central jail Srinagar. They also restricted the movement of Mirwaiz Umer Farooq to his residence.
