Cop, militant killed in shoot out at Zakura

Srinagar: A police official and a militant was killed in a shootout in Zakura area on the outskirts of Srinagar city on Friday afternoon, police said.

Reports said that a group of militants fired upon a police party that was on way to Zakura resulting in injuries of two policemen including Sub-Inspector Imran Ahmed and constable Suhail Ahmed.

Imran Ahmed succumbed to his injuries while the wounded constable is undergoing treatment at a local hospital here, police said.

During the attack, the slain cop is reported to have fired several shots from his service pistol which resulted in injuries to a militant identified as Mugees Ahmad Mir hailing from Parimpora area of Srinagar.

Mugees, according to police sources was associated with Tehreek ul Mujahideen and was active since 2016.

Police sources said that soon after the attack, locals recovered a body of a young man from an orchard who had several bullet marks on his body. Police sources said that the body was identified as that of Mugees who might have tried to escape after getting injured in the shootout at Zakura.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports said that Mugees Ahmad Mir had joined Al-Qaida’s  offshoot Gazwat ul Hind and was working under the direct command of Zakir Moosa.

Reports said that a militant has also been arrested during the melee. However, police sources said that the arrested person is a physical trainer identified as Tawseef. he was arrested at the site, however, he is being questioned.

Meanwhile, a wreath laying ceremony for the slain cop was observed in Police Control Room Srinagar

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti also paid rich tributes to the Sub Inspector of J&K Police, Imran Tak.

Mehbooba Mufti said violence is no means to achieve any goals, rather it tears apart the entire social fabric of the society.

The Chief Minister has conveyed her sympathies with the bereaved family of slain cop.
