CASO in South Kashmir ends ‘peacefully’

Shopian/Kulgam: The Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) launched by the government forces in at least 20 villages of South Kashmir’s Shopian and Kulgam districts on Thursday ended with no results. Notably, this was the sixth major CASO launched in South Kashmir this year.

The locals said that the CASO launched by the forces in the wee hours of this morning was called off in the afternoon as the forces did not find any militant present in the villages.

Sources informed that the CASO was launched in the villages following the inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

The troopers in large number were deployed in 20 villages of the two districts including Chiterwich, Imamsahib, Yamrch Munad, Gofan, Hillow, Barbug, Kadgam, woyen, DK Pora, Badimarg, Manihall, Batapora, Amarbugh, Sursuna, Tangdoo, Sempora, Derapora, Reshi Pora, Nildora and Manchu. 

“The locals were frisked and the major roads leading towards the villages were blocked by the forces and a massive search operation was launched in the area,” a resident informed said.

However, the forces in the afternoon called off the operations as no militant was found in the villages during the searches. 

Notably, this was the fifth major CASO that was carried out without any major results.

On May 4, more than 4000 troopers had cordoned of 20 villages in South Kashmir’s Shopian including Turkwangam, Sugan, Aripora, Chitragam, Trenz, Heff, Chillipora, Shermal and many other areas, but the operation was called off as no militant was found in the area.

On August 19 Kellar, Zaipora, Ranipora, Pratabpora, Takipora, Batpora, Bamnoo and the adjoining areas was cordoned by Army’s 62 RR and 14th Bn of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). However, the operation was later called off.

On Aug, 28, the 62 Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operations Group of Jammu Kashmir Police laid a massive CASO around at least 6 Villages in Southern Kashmir’s Shopian District including  Wangam, Zaipora, Dangam, Tekipora and adjoining villages, but no militant was found in the villages.

On Sep 05, the villages Nagbal, Hussanpora, Urpora and Homehuna areas were cordoned off by the Special Operation Group of Police and 44 RR of Indian Army, but the operation failed again.

The last Cordon and Search Operation launched by Government forces was also called off with no achievement in the Shopian area on October 25.
