Srinagar: Three prominent Kashmiri leaders who together met the special representative of the Centre Dineshwar Sharma here today said the government of India should take confidence building measures (CBM) to make the present process of talks meaningful.

“If Government of India wants to make this process credible , they need to take some confidence building measures,” State secretary of CPI(M) M Y Tarigami told reporters here after meeting Sharma along with Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, President of Democratic people’s front and Ghulam Hassan Mir, president of democratic nationalist party.

He said they also demanded talks with all stakeholders including those who share voices of dissent and Hurriyat Conference.

Referring to the statements issued by senior BJP leaders, Tarigami said they told Sharma that since his appointment,” many senior leaders gave different statements which were against the process of negotations. People then felt that the Government is perhaps not serious.”

He said they told him that as far as they were concerned, they believed violence is no solution, application of force is not an option and dialogue is the only option in available to resolve the Kashmir issue.

“There is need for sustained and result oriented dialogue for resolution of this vexed issue,”  Tarigami added.

“They also brought to the notice of Sharma the fate of reports of previous interlocutors saying those reports were not presented in parliament and no one knows what happened to those reports.  What happened to reports submitted by previous interlocutors, no one knows. That is why people don’t trust interlocutors and they treat it as joke,” Tarigami said.

Tairgami said they demanded initiation of CBMS like a statement by the Prime Minister in the parliament to address reservations of people about article 370 and 35-A which guarantees special status to Jammu and Kashmir as there is talk of scrapping of these articles of the constitution.

Other slew of demands include setting up of credible judicial commission by the Centre to probe tragedies in 2010, 2016 and redress the grievances of people, the cases of political prisoners in and outside the state should be reviewed and they should be released. Also, the cases filed in 2016 against youths including school going children should be reviewed and those cases should be withdrawn, Tarigami said adding they also demanded that the security bunkers in Kashmir should be removed.
