Terror funding: NIA claims recovery of huge sums
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday claimed it had seized nearly Rs 36.5 crore in demonetised notes during its probe into the Kashmir funding case.
“We have seized demonetised currency of face value Rs 36,34,78,500 and arrested nine persons in this connection in the Jammu and Kashmir funding case,” the NIA said.
However, details of the seizure were not known immediately or whether the arrests included separatist leaders and Kashmiri businessmen who are in Tihar Jail on charges of funding.
The claim came amid opposition claims that the November 8, 2016 decision to spike 1,000 and 500 rupee notes (almost 86 per cent of the currency in circulation) had made no significant impact on curbing violence.
Meanwhile, NIA in a press release identified some of the arrested persons as Pradeep Chauhan age 47 years of Nangli Razapur, Sarai Kale Khan, New Delhi, Bhagwan Singh age 54 years of Sainik Farm, New Delhi, Vinod Shreedhar Shetty age 47 years of Shanti Nagar, Mira Road (east), Mumbai, Shahnawaz Mir age 45 years of Khirkee Extension Malviya Nagar and Khayyam Chowk Srinagar, J&K, Deepak Toprani age 60 years of Premier Road, Vidya Vihar West, Mumbai, Majid Yousuf Sofi age 27 years of Al Farooq Colony, Anchidora, Anantnag, J&K, Ejajul Hassan age 38 years of Sriram Colony, Rajiv nagar, Hazuri Delhi and Didauli, Amroha, UP, Umar Mushtaq Dar age 27 years of Dangarpura, Pulwama, J&K and Jaswinder Singh age 53 years of Hemchandra App, Civil Lines, Nagpur.
NIA also claimed that BMW X3 (Blue), Creta SX (White), Ford EcoSport Titanium (Black)and a BMW X1 (White) were recovered from the arrested persons.
