Three militants, soldier killed in Pulwama gunfight

Srinagar: Three militants and an army man were killed on Monday in gunfight between the government forces and militants in Kandi Aglar village of Pulwama district. 

A defense official said three militants, who are believed to be associated with Jaish-e-Muhammad, have been killed in the fierce encounter that broke out this evening at Kandi Aglar village.

The bodies of all the three militants were recovered along with two AK-47 rifles and a pistol, he said.

The identity of the militants is yet to be ascertained, said the defence spokesman, adding that the encounter is over now but searches are underway.

Earlier a soldier identified as Sham Sunder of 44 Rashtriya Rifles was also killed during the encounter.

A civilian identified as Tariq Ahmad sustained a bullet injury during simultaneous clashes between protesting civilians and the security forces near the encounter site. The protesters were trying to disrupt the operation against the holed up militants.

Police said the injured civilian was shifted to hospital.

Following special intelligence inputs troops of the Rashtriya Rifles, state police and the Central Reserve Police Force had surrounded Aglar village on Monday evening.

As the security forces closed in on the hiding militants, they were fired at, triggering the gunfight that was still ongoing when this report was filed.

Meanwhile, Internet facility in Pulwama district has been suspended.
