Class 10th exams begin with 97.7 percent attendance
Srinagar: The class 10th annual JK Board of School Education (BOSE) exams commenced on Thursday with 97.7 percent eligible students taking the exams at 650 examination centre designated in government and private schools in Kashmir as well as winter zone of Jammu.
As many as 64933 students appeared in the exams while as 1499 students remained absent.
“There was 97.7 percent attendance of students in exam centres on first day in 650 exam centres,” Joint Secretary Examination, JKBOSE, Syed Rouf said.
BOSE had scheduled English paper for students on Thursday.
However, students complained that there were some discrepancies in two questions carrying weight-age of 3 marks each.
“We couldn’t attempt these two questions due to some error in the questions,” the students said.
Joint Secretary Examination Syed Rouf confirmed the error in setting of questions and said the students will be given full marks of these two questions.
“We were informed about these two questions carrying three marks each. We have informed the students that they will be awarded full marks for these two questions,” Syed Rouf said.
Joint Secretary Examination however, said there were more than 600 shortage cases in class 10th this year.
“We were informed by the concerned school heads that these students don’t have above 66 percentage attendance in their schools. So admit cards were not issued to these students,” he said.
Secretary School Education Farooq Ahmad Shah, Director School Education Kashmir G N Itoo, secretary BOSE Veena Pandita, Director academics Farooq Ahmad Peer visited various schools including Kothi Bagh Girls higher secondary school to inspect the conduct of exams.
Meanwhile, police arrested the chairman and principal of a private school in Sumbal area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir after twenty-six students of tenth standard of the school missed their first paper.
The students missed their first paper after the school administration failed to provide them admit cards for the examination.
The school, according to BOSE officials was running 9th and 10th classes without any affiliation with BOSE and registration with the government.
A police official said that they arrested Chairman of the Noorani Educational Institute Sumbal, his wife and sealed the school following protests by students of 10th standard who were enrolled in the school for 2017 session.
“The students who missed the first paper of Secondary school examination that commenced today across the valley held protest after they were denied admit cards by the school authority as the school had no registration with JK BOSE,” he said.
Minister for education Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari meanwhile, said the students who missed their exams will be allowed to appear in upcoming private annual exams.
“I have asked BOSE chairman to convene a special meeting and see if the students have passed their 9th class exams. We will allow them to appear in private exams so that their session is saved,” Altaf Bukhari said.
