Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, G A Mir on Tuesday said state unit of the party is being revamped and it is the time that the dead wood is removed from the party.

Mir, while addressing a huge gathering of party workers who had come from different parts of the state to pay tributes to the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, said the PCC will bring those leaders at the front who have a support base in their constituencies and other areas and not those who are leaders just by their names.

“We will remove the deadwood. We will give the front stage to those party men who have a following on the ground. Those who work and are visible on the ground. Not those who are just leaders wearing sunglasses and travelling in big vehicles and have no support at all,” Mir said.

Hailing the work of former PM Indira Gandhi, Mir said if Narendra Modi rules India for the next thousands of years, he would still not be able to destroy the footprints of Indira.

“Indira Gandhi for her work and commitment towards her people and nation earned her a name of Iron Lady of India. She built India. She had rich affection towards Kashmiris,” Mir said.

He said the former Prime Minister’s assassination on this day 33 years before was a great loss to the entire nation.

“Indira Ji started her career by participating in the freedom struggle along with her family and contributed immensely to the freedom movement and overall development of the country,” Mir said.

He said the departed leader, who worked as a soldier safeguarded the country and people from internal and external enemies, while having never compromised on anything.

“She rather dealt sternly with the enemies of peace and ensured safety and security of the entire nation and its people,” Mir added.

Mir also lashed out at the Prime Minister for encouraging communal forces for the sake of political gains.

“I want to tell the Prime Minister and his associates that they won’t succeed in converting secular India of Indira Gandhi into communal India. Congress Party is capable enough to defeat the communal and fascist forces vitiating atmosphere to serve their vested interests,” he added.

“The Congress Party will continue to fight for the people and won’t compromise on its stated positing of maintaining secular fabric, unity and harmony in the Country,” he added.

He asked the workers to follow the path of NC patron Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah till the next Sheikh Abdullah is born.

“We don’t have any leader like Sheikh Abdullah. So we need to follow his footprints till another Sheikh Abdullah is born,” he said.

Mir said that the Congress party would fight the RSS forces who have otherwise strengthened their roots in Kashmir by the blessing of PDP and Mehbooba Mufti.

“We will fight the communal forces and restore the communal harmony in J&K,” he said.

He asked party workers to start preparing for the upcoming Panchayat polls and register a thumping victory for the party candidates.
