NIA arrests Syed Salahuddin’s son

Srinagar: National Investigation Agency (NIA) today arrested Syed Shahid Yousuf, son of Hizbul Mujahideen founder and chief of United Jihad Council (UJC) Syed Salahuddin, in New Delhi in a case registered against Hizbul Mujahideen in 2011.

According to the NIA, Syed Shahid Yousuf has been receiving and collecting funds through international wire money transfer over the years. NIA said that funds were received through a member of Hizbul Mujahideen Ajaz Ahmad Bhat alias Aijaz Maqbool Bhat who is currently residing in Saudi Arabia and is wanted in the said case.

The NIA also said that it has filed two charge sheets against the six accused in this case in 2011.

“Out of these six charge sheeted and accused including Ghulam Ahmad Bhat, close associate of SAS Geelani, Chairman, Tehrik-e-Hurriyat (G) are in judicial custody and facing the trial in the special court, New Delhi and two other identified as Mohammad Maqbool Pandit and Ajaz Ahmad are still absconding,” NIA said in a statement.

NIA said that a Red Notice has already been issued against both the absconding accused persons.

“Syed Shahid Yousuf is the son of Syed Salahuddin self-styled commander-in-chief United Jihad Council (UJC) son of Ghulam Rasool Shah, resident of Soibugh, Police station Budgam District Budgam Jammu and Kashmir who is an absconder in another terror funding case RC-112011/NIA/DLI dated 25th October 2011,” NIA said.

The NIA had already filed the charge sheet against Mohammad Yousuf Shah, Shahid Salauddin on 30 November 2013 along with 9 co accused persons under section 120B read with 121A of Indian penal code and section 17, 18, 18A, 18B, 38, 39 and 40 of the unlawful activities prevention act 1967 .

“Out of the ten accused persons two are in custody and 8 including Muhammad Yousuf Shah alias Salahuddin are absconding and residing in Pakistan and PoK. Subsequently two supplementary charge sheets were filed against the two accused person in this case,” NIA said.

NIA said that Salahuddin has been declared as proclaimed offender. Red Notice number 1998 /6479, A-66/2-1998 in this respect was published on 22 January 2014. The agency also said that the process for this listing is ‘designated terrorist’ under 1267 UNHCR has been initiated since April 2014.

“Syed Shahid Yousuf is one of the server Indian contacts of Aijaz Ahmad Bhat who has been in telephonic contact with him to receive the money transfer quotes after his arrest he will be produced before any special court in New Delhi and will be taken on police custody remand for further investigation and integration.”

Shahid was served the summons on October 16 to present himself before NIA investigators at their New Delhi office on October 24, Tuesday.

Shahid, is the third son of Mohammad Yousuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin, supreme commander of the UJC which is a conglomerate of more than twelve militant outfits.

Reports said that Shahid was earlier questioned four times by NIA sleuths at their Humhama station. “He was questioned about his family and the NIA sleuths had taken his mobile phone as well,” reports said.

Shahid has a Masters in Agriculture from a university outside J&K and he was regularised in the state’s agriculture department in March this year, after 8 years of service. He has three sons, one of whom is a patient of down syndrome.
