Srinagar: For the fourth straight week today, the administration enforced yet another lockdown of the historic Jamia Masjid here by imposing strict restrictions in Srinagar parts in wake of the protest call given by the pro-freedom camp.

The restrictions under section 144 were imposed in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven Police Stations including Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud as ‘precautionary measure’.

While panic has gripped the people over the rising number of braid chopping incidents in Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had appealed people to protest after Friday congregational prayers today against what they termed as the ‘attack on women’s dignity’.

Witnesses said that heavy contingents of police and paramilitary troopers were deployed on the roads who had erected concertina wires on the roads leading towards the restriction bound areas, which halted the vehicular as well as the pedestrian movement.

Amid tight restrictions, the historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area remained closed for the fourth straight week, witnesses added.

Witnesses said that the authorities barred people to offer the Friday congregational prayers in the Jamia Masjid today.

“The Police and paramilitary troopers didn’t allow us to offer mandatory Friday prayers in the Jamia Masjid,” locals informed.

They informed that all the four gates of historic Masjid remained closed due to the strict patrolling of troops in the area.

The head cleric of the Masjid and the Hurriyat Conference (M) chief, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continued to remain under house arrest from last several weeks.

Meanwhile, the protests against the mysterious braid chopping continued today.

Following the call given by the JRL, the JKLF leaders and activists protested against the mysterious braid chopping incidents in Srinagar.

They raised slogans in favour of freedom and said that the administration has failed to nab the culprits involved in these incidents.

The JRL has also called for the shutdown on Saturday, asking people to mark a protest against the growing incidents of braid chopping incidents in Kashmir.
