Srinagar: As the mystery of ‘braid chopping’ continues to haunt people, a legislator from the opposition National Conference on Wednesday announced a reward of Rupees ten lakh for the police if they nab the braid choppers and solve the mystery.

Member Legislative Assembly for Pahalgam Altaf Ahmad Wani, also known as Altaf Kuloo on Wednesday offered to give Rs ten lakh to the police for getting the braid choppers.

The MLA said that people have been showered with bullets who gave “clue” to police. “Seven youths were injured at Pahalgam today. You (police) have kept Rs 6 lakh as reward for clue on braid chopping. I will give Rs 10 lakh to you (police) and get the culprits,” he said.

More than 100 braid chopping incidents have been reported so far but no arrests have been made even after passage of one month.

Police has formed Special investigation teams and round the clock helplines in every district to probe the incidents. It has also announced a reward of Rs 6 lakh to anybody who can give leads on the braid choppers.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also assured stern action against the culprits and public avowed to get to the root of the incident and unmask those behind such incidents.

She said such incidents were attempts to create mass hysteria and undermine the dignity of women in the state.

She also vowed to take steps to “find the motives behind the braid chopping attacks”.

“Braid chopping incidents are attempts to create mass hysteria and undermine the dignity of the women in the state,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter last week.

After some time, she had followed it by stating: “Government will ensure steps are taken to find the motives behind these attacks.”
