Slain Sarpanch’s house set on fire

Srinagar: Barely a day after suspected militants killed a former Sarpanch Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh at his home in Homhuna village in Imamsahab area of Shopian district, angry protestors today set his house on fire. 

Sheikh who was an activist of the ruling PDP had already announced his severing of ties with mainstream political parties after militants had reportedly threatened him to announce it publically.

Reports said that a group of people Tuesday afternoon ransacked his house and later set it on fire.

A police officer said that the group of people at around 4:00 pm ransacked the house and set it ablaze. The incident left the family in a state of shock, he added.

“Soon after the incident, fire tenders along with the police team rushed to the spot to douse off the flames,” witnesses said.

Pertinently, a militant Showkat Kumar of Trenz was killed during a scuffle that broke after a Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) activist was shot at   by suspected militants.

Locals, alleged that Kumar bore no bullet marks on his body as he was hit by a sharp edged weapon by some family members of the slain former Sarpanch.

“Showkat had gone inside the house of Sheikh just to warn him. He was not carrying any weapons with him,” said a local, wishing anonymity.

However, the family members thought that he had come to target Sheikh, who attacked the latter with the weapon.
