Braid Chopping: Women targeted in Kupwara, South Kashmir and Srinagar

Srinagar: The mystery shrouding the incidents of braid chopping, worsened further as suspected braid choppers targeted a woman in the frontier district of Kupwara on Thursday. Meanwhile, the incidents continued in South Kashmir and Srinagar as well. 

According to the reports, a 32 year old woman (name withheld) was targeted in Awoora Kupwara, when suspected braid choppers cut her hair in the morning. The incident left the woman unconscious and she was shifted to district hospital Kupwara for treatment.

Police officials said that the incident has been reported from Awoora Kupwara, and police is on the job to trace the culprits.

DYSP Headquaters Kupwara Fayaz Geelani said that no other harm has been done to the victim.

Meanwhile, in another incident of braid chopping in South Kashmir, braid of a 35 year old woman was cut in Shikhgund area of Braed Aangan in Anantnag District.

According to the reports, the braid choppers fled the scene after the incident.

Meanwhile, according to the sources, fresh braid chopping incidents were reported from Batamaloo, Palapora Noorbagh and Umarheer Bacchpora localities of Srinagar city on Thursday.

Protests erupted in the Batamaloo area after fresh braid chopping incident was reported from the area.

According to the reports, the lady was hospitalized following the braid-cutting. Reports said that the victim was busy in her daily chores when an unknown person entered her home and chopped her braid.

They said that the residents of Batamallo took to streets to protest the braid-chopping of a pregnant woman this morning at 9 am.

Meanwhile, protests erupted in Maisuma area of the city against the incidents of braid chopping across Kashmir. Women in Maisuma took to the roads to protest against government’s failure to nab the culprits. The residents of Khanyar, Lal Bazar area also staged a protest against the alleged inaction of police against braid choppers in the locality.

In central Kashmir Ganderbal residents of Manigam area staged a protest against the alleged inaction of police against braid choppers.

The students of Kashmir University also staged protests against alleged failure of the government to prevent braid-chopping incidents in the Valley.

“Since incidents of braid chopping have increased in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley, it is our moral responsibility to raise our voice against cruelty meted out to our mothers and sisters. Government must wake up and take strong notice of the situation,” one of the student was quoted as having said.

Meanwhile, the students of Central University of Kashmir, Nowgam campus also staged a protest demonstration against the increasing braid-chopping incidents in the Valley.

The protest was held inside the CUK Nowgam campus with the students seeking an end to the mysterious braid-chopping incidents which have increased over the past one month.

Carrying banners and play cards, the students chanted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

Students also raised slogans against the incumbent government and the police for their incompetence in nabbing the culprits. 

“Police do not leave a single stone unturned when they nab a stone pelter, why have turned so incompetent now,” a student told the protesting students’ gathering.

The Joint separatist leadership had asked the students to stage protests against the braid-chopping spree. 

However, the authorities closed the schools across the Kashmir valley to prevent protests. Separatists have blamed the government for the braid-chopping, authorities said they are investigating the “role of anti-national elements benefitting from protests” triggered by these acts.
