On ‘World Mental Health Day’ braid chopping victims get no mention

Srinagar: The medics who observed the ‘World Mental Health Day’ on Tuesday preferred to remain tight lipped on the trauma that is being faced by the victims of braid chopping.

With more than 50 incidents reported all across valley now, people, especially womenfolk are run down with panic. There was no mention of the victims of braid chopping, instead many talked of different sorts of addiction prevalent in the society.

At a similar function at Government Medical College Srinagar, medics and experts talked about everything but traumatized braid chopping victims.

The incidents are increasing day by day with no let up, with experts warning that if such incidents continue unabated, it is going to aggravate the condition of those victims, who may start developing psychological disorders after being subjected to braid chopping.

However, the warning seems not to be enough to wake the medics up from the deep slumber.

At GMC, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Abid Rashid instead talked about the ills of technology addiction, and asking Head of the Psychology Department, to take up initiatives to address the issue of technology addiction.

“I expect that the department of Psychology will take up immediate initiatives to spread awareness about the technology addiction, and I am ready to help them in any possible way,” he said.

Experts had earlier warned that there is a wide range of behaviours that the victims are expected to response in, such as they are going to develop symptoms of depression, and some may plunge deep into depression, if such incidents do not stop.

While making understand the gravity of such incidents, the experts had said that if such victims are not addressed in proper time frame, then in near future—if such incidents keep on happening—situation is going to be worse, with psychological complications taking deep roots in the society, especially with the womenfolk who are the immediate targets of these mysterious elements involved in braid chopping.
