Braid chopping incidents continue: 55-year-old woman targeted in Srinagar

Despite assurances by the Chief Minister that the braid chopping incidents will be stopped and the case cracked, the incidents of chopping the hair of women folk continues with a 55-year-old woman becoming a victim in Srinagar on Tuesday.

Police sources said that the braid of a 55 year old woman was chopped off at Malbagh area of Srinagar city on Tuesday morning.

A police officer said that the woman Shareefa w/o Mohammad Yousf Ahanger fell unconscious before her braid was cut by three unknown persons wearing pheran inside her home at Hafiz Bagh area of Malbagh, Srinagar.

The officer said that the woman was immediately taken to SKIMS Soura and her condition is said to be stable.

“At the time of the incident, the woman according to police was alone inside her house and the incident created panic in the area”.

Soon after the incident, the officer said that a police party was immediately dispatched to the spot.

In another incident of such kind, people staged a protest in central Kashmir’s Magam area after reports about a pregnant woman’s braid being chopped off was reported on Monday afternoon. 

Notably, the hair of several young girls and women in many parts of the Valley has been mysteriously found chopped off during the past month.

These girls and women have told their families and police that unknown persons cut their hair after knocking them unconscious with some spray.

Authorities have so far been clueless even as over two dozen incidents of braid chopping have taken place across the Valley.

The police has announced a cash reward of Rs 6 lakh for credible information to nab people behind braid chopping incidents.

A helpline has also been established so that “people could inform and seek assistance with regard to any braid cutting incident.”

To speed up the investigation process, Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have also been constituted in every district headquarters of the valley.
