“Shia community is likely to organize procession on 9th and 10th Muharram i.e 30th  of September -2017 and 1st of October respectively. As per inputs received there is credible apprehension that certain miscreants may disturb the procession and create law and order problems which may result in the breach of peace and public tranquillity and may cause loss of life and property,” said an order from district magistrate Srinagar.

“Therefore, in order to facilitate the religious gathering of the community smoothly as per past practice and to maintain peace, public tranquillity and to ensure the safety of life and property, imposition of restriction in terms of section 144 Crpc has become imperative,” the order added.

Meanwhile, pedestrian and vehicular movement was also suspended and coils of razor fitted wire were placed on the main roads to prevent movement of traffic.

Heavy contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in full riot gear have been deployed in the city.

The restrictions will remain in force until Sunday, the officials added.
