In a first, National Investigation Agency (NIA) has summoned a mainstream leader and Independent MLA from Langate for questioning in a case related to the alleged funding of terror activities in the Valley.

MLA from Kupwara’s Langate constituency Sheikh Abdul Rasheed, popularly known as Engineer Rasheed, has been called for questioning on October 3.

According to the sources, his name had cropped up during the interrogation of businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the NIA for allegedly supplying money to terror groups and separatists in the Valley.

Rasheed, an independent MLA from Langate in North Kashmir, has been denying any involvement in the case and has appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly speaker to initiate an inquiry.

Reacting to the development, Rasheed said that summoning him to NIA is politically motivated and he will continue to tell spade a spade whatsoever it may cost.

In a statement issued today Er. Rasheed questioned government’s intentions and said that government should investigate hundreds of custodial killings, forced labor in border areas and huge atrocities and torture on innocent civilians which took place during last 29 years, before dragging every sincere Kashmiri to New Delhi through NIA.

“My life is like an open book and my people who have voted me second time as their representative against all odds are the best judge to judge my activities,” he said.

Rasheed had earlier lashed out at Central government for using NIA against Kashmiris and Hurriyat leaders in particular.
