15 years on, Govt fails to upgrade infrastructure in GHSS Verinag
Even after 15 years since the authorities upgraded the school in Verinag, the education department has miserably failed to repair the school building as well as to upgrade the infrastructure in the institute.
The lack of infrastructure in Girl’s Higher Secondary School Verinag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district exposes the tall claims of the government.
The students said that the lack of infrastructure has resulted in tremendous hardships to them. “The school is without wash rooms, library and more importantly an office,” the students lamented.
Officials informed ‘Kashmir Vision’ that the school was upgraded in 2003 from High School to Higher Secondary during the Congress and PDP coalition regime.
“The school is still running in the same old damaged building, constructed at the time of its establishment as High School,” officials said.
Officials said that around 600 students are enrolled in the higher secondary in different wings, having only eight rooms to handle complete setup of secondary and higher secondary levels.
They said that lack of space in the school has forced a large number of students to get discharge from the school and now they have to travel long distances to other institutions.
Officials said that the construction of new building for the higher secondary was started in the year 2006 at the outskirts of Verinag market but due to a ‘tussle’ between government and the land owner, the building is awaiting completion.
Earlier, during 2014 elections, the current MLA Syed Farooq Ahmad Indrabi had promised the Verinag residents that he would resolve this issue after assuming the charge but the promises proved hoax, locals alleged.
The students appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to intervene into the matter and redress their genuine grievances at an earliest.
