Police on Wednesday detained scores of Anganwadi workers who were on hunger strike at Srinagar’s Press Enclave to press the Government for increasing their monthly honorarium.

Pertinently, the hunger strike of the Amaganwadi workers entered in third day on Wednesday.

The protesters who had assembled at Press Enclave here held a sit-in against what they termed as the failure of authorities over increasing their monthly dues.

The workers earlier attempted self-immolation as a mark of protest against the state government and to press for their demands.

Amid anti-Government sloganeering, the protesters while being chased by the state women police tried to resist and tried to come out of the Press Enclave but the police didn’t allow them and bundled them in their vehicles.

Earlier, the Anganwadi protesters said that the government has miserably failed to look into the issues pertaining to the Anganwadi workers, who are working are serving the department on a meager amount.

They said that besides performing their duties, they are being sending on deputation for election duties and others.

“The Anganwadi workers at various other states including Delhi and others are being paid over Rs 12000 per month but unfortunately, the JK government is still paying us Rs 3600 per month, which is insufficient,” they said, adding that the government must increase their monthly honorarium upto Rs 14000 per month.
