Authorities Saturday took note of 16 teachers who were found absent from their duties in Government Girls High School and Girls Middle School Hazratbal.

According to the reports, the district administration today visited the two government-run schools in Hazratbal area of Srinagar.

Sources said that one teacher has been found to be absent from the last month.

However, arrival register shows the teachers, including the absent teacher, present in the school.

Sources said that the head of the school was found not to have entered a single leave for the current year for the absent and late-coming teachers.

The arrival register which was seized by the officials showed two teachers coming to the office at 11:30 am every other day and leaving office soon after hardly attending any classes.

Sources said that ‘these teachers have been in the school for more than three or four years and hardly taught any classes’.

Meanwhile, according to the reports, barely an hour after the district authorities visited the school, Chief Education Officer Srinagar also paid a visit to the school and reportedly has assured the absent teachers to save them from suspension.

The Deputy Commissioners office has, however, seized all the records from the school.

Meanwhile, locals have demanded that the teachers be transferred from the school.

“We demand that teachers who have been in the school for more than three years be shifted from there as they hardly give any classes and are mostly absent,” locals said.

Meanwhile, an official spokesman said that a joint inspection squad constituted by the District Development Commissioner Srinagar and Directorate of School Education Kashmir today visited several schools in and around the city to check attendance of the staff.

During the surprise inspection by the special squad, 11 teachers of Government High School Hazratbal and 5 teachers of Government High School Saderbal were found on unauthorized absence from duty.

On the recommendation of the inspection squad, the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Srinagar has ordered immediate suspension of these 16 teachers for dereliction of duties. An inquiry has also been ordered against the said teachers.
