Restrictions imposed in summer Capital, teaching activity suspended
In wake of protest call given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), the district administration Srinagar on Friday imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts to thwart any possible protest against the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raids, arrests and massacre of Rohingya Muslims.
Officials informed Kashmir Vision said that the restrictions under section 144 CrPc were imposed in the Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of five Police Stations including Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar and Safakadal as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident.
Witnesses said that a huge contingent of forces was deployed in these areas to thwart any possible protest called by JRL including Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik. They said that the police and paramilitary troopers deployed on the roads had also erected concertina wires to thwart vehicular movement in restriction bound areas.
Apart from the restrictions, the district administration had also suspended the class work in all the educational institutes including the colleges today while the University of Kashmir had also postponed the exams scheduled for the day.
Officials said that the teaching activity in all the educational institutes of the district remained suspended as a precautionary measure.
Authorities had also suspended the train services citing “security reasons” in the Kashmir Valley following the killing of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) chief Abu Ismail and his associate Abu Qasim in a brief gunfight on Thursday.
The train services between Srinagar-Budgam and Baramulla and Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund to Banihal remained suspended throughout the day, officials said.
Meanwhile, later in the afternoon, on JRL’s call, the leaders, activists and workers of pro-freedom group took to streets at Maisuma here soon after the Friday congregational prayers ended at Gaw Kadal Masjid.
The protesting pro-freedom activists and leaders were holding placards reading anti-NIA slogans.
The JRL leaders termed the NIA raids and arrests of political leaders, journalists and others as ‘frustration of Government of India’.
Saying that such arrests and raids are aimed to defame the pro-freedom leaders and movement, the protesters said that such arrests won’t yield any result.
