Rajnath Singh arrives in Kashmir, meets Mehbooba

Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh arrived here today on a four day visit to the State.

In the first leg of his four-day visit, Rajnath Singh today met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti here in Srinagar. The Home Minister had a one-on-one meeting with the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti.

According to an official spokesperson, the two leaders discussed the overall situation, implementation of the Agenda of Alliance (AoA) and execution of Prime Minister’s Development Package in the State.

The Chief Minister impressed upon the need to reach out to all sections of the society in the State which has been duly recognized in the AoA. She said the needs and problems of the people of the State have been recognized in the AoA and its implementation needs to be fast paced.

The two leaders recognized the need for timely implementation of the AoA which provides a definite roadmap to resolve the problems confronting the State.

Mehbooba Mufti also requested for regular and timely release of funds for various projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Package.

 Later, Home Minister presided over Prime Minister Package Review Meeting, the development package of Rs. 80,000 crore was announced in 2015 by the Union government. According to the Home Ministry officials, the Central government has already sanctioned Rs. 62599 crores which amounts to 78 percent of the total cost of the PMDP package.

PMDP includes assistance for completely damaged or partially damaged houses due to floods.  According to the reports, the  project costing Rs. 1200 cr is now complete along with 4 laning project of Chenani-Nashri section of NH-1A with a cost of 781 crores.

The meeting was informed that 63 projects have been taken up under PMDP by 15 Union Ministries through 39 executing agencies. Of them around 80% of the projects stand formally sanctioned, the meeting was told.

Home Minister also instructed the authorities to expedite the implementation of remaining ongoing projects of PMDP.

“I have asked the authorities to expedite the implementation of the PMDP in a time bound manner. It will create jobs for the people of J&K,” Singh tweeted.

Later, in the afternoon the Union Minister met with a delegation of House Boat Owners Association of Kashmir and Kashmir Hotel & Restaurants Association in Srinagar.

“Various stakeholders of the tourism sector met the home minister to discuss the activities related to the sector,” Home Ministry officials said.

A delegation of Sikhs and youth particularly entrepreneurs and artists from Kashmir valley also met Home Minister in Srinagar.

Singh’s trip to Jammu and Kashmir is seen as a follow-up to PM Narendra Modi’s Independence Day reach-out to Kashmiris.

Earlier in the day, Rajnath Singh had tweeted, “I am going there with an open mind and I am willing to meet anyone who will help us in finding solutions to problems facing J&K”.

Rajnath Singh was welcomed by the deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh along with  other officials of the state at Srinagar Airport.
