Road mishaps leave four people dead, nine injured

Two persons were killed and five others injured after a speeding army vehicle hit a passenger cab on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Banihal on Friday, police sources said.

Meanwhile, two persons were killed and four others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in rolled down into deep gorge at Thatri town of Doda district of Jammu division.

A police official said that an army vehicle on way to Udhampur from Srinagar suffered a head-on collision with a passenger cab coming from the opposite direction near Chamalwas.

Two persons, including the driver of the passenger cab, bearing registration number JK-19 0325, died on the spot, the official added.

They were identified as Manjeet Singh (28), son of Jagit Ram, resident of Digdol and Nisar Ahmad (38), a resident of Batmaloo Srinagar.

Five injured persons were identified as Mohammad Tariq, son of Abdullah, resident of Ransu Budgam, Fayaz Ahmed S/o Ghulam Mohammad of Manchar Kupwara, Dilshada Begum W/O Mohammad Ashraf Sheikh of Alinbass Tehsil Pogal Paristan, Irshad Ahmed Najar S/o Khajar Mohammad Najar of Pulwama and Mukhtayar Ahmed S/o Absul Aziz Khan of Krawa Banihal.

An official said that a case FIR number 138/2017 U/S 279/304-A RPC has been registered and investigations taken up.

Meanwhile, at least two persons were killed and four others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in rolled down into deep gorge at Thatri town of Doda district of Jammu division, police sources said.

They said that the vehicle bearing registration No. JK06-3384 rolled down early morning today resulting in the on spot death of two persons.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Ashraf and Ghulam Ali while the injured include Farooq Tantry, Touseef Ahmad, Sadam Hussain and Javeed Wani.

“The driver perhaps lost control over the vehicle due to slippery conditions on the slope near Jangalwar village on Thathri-Phagsoo road. The vehicle rolled down 150-feet-deep gorge,” Mohammadd Anwar Banday, Sub Divisional Magistrate Thathri said.

Meanwhile, all the injured have been taken to the nearby hospital.

In another incident, nine Army Jawans got injured after their vehicle skidded off NH1C in Reasi district of Jammu division.

According to the sources, the army jawanas were travelling in a bullet proof vehicle when it skidded off the road near Karwara village of Reasi.

All the jawans were admitted in the nearby hospital. Their condition is said to be stable.

Earlier on 11 August six people died after a vehicle carrying fifteen passengers rolled down the gorge on the same route. Nine people were injured in the accident.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had last week said that the growing number of road incidents in the hilly areas of the state call for a review of the status of passenger safety, vehicle and road conditions and other parameters.
