Eid-ul-Adha, festival of sacrifice, will be observed with religious fervor across the state of Jammu and Kashmir today.

Huge congregational Eid prayer gathering are expected at Eidgah and Aasar-e-Sharif Dargah Hazratbal here, apart from the local Masjids, Shrines and Eidgahs at various districts across the State where religious scholars will throw light on the significance of Eid-ul-Adha and the importance of offering Kurbani.

However, the authorities have disallowed the congregational Eid prayers at TRC where Jamiat-e-Ahlihadees were scheduled to offer prayers and where a huge congregation was also expected. The administration disallowed the prayers at TRC citing security measures.

Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman and Jamia Masjid’s head cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq will address a gathering at Eidgah today from 08:30 am onwards while the prayers will be offered at 09:30 am.

As per the Islamic teachings, the Muslims across the State will start performing the act of sacrificing animals following the congregational Eid prayers as this Eid is being observed to commemorate Prophet Ibraham’s (AS) willingness to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS).

Unlike previous year, the hustle and bustle was witnessed in the markets as people alongwith their children were involved in Eid shopping.

Pertinently, during the previous year (2016), the Valley witnessed an uprising that started following the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani during which nearly 100 people were killed and thousands others were injured and blinded.

Today, the shoppers in large number including men, women and children were seen thronging the markets throughout the day. The shoppers were seen buying essentials, clothes, shoes, firecrackers, toys and food stuff for the Eid.

Though the queues of customers were seen outside bakery and mutton shops, the most crowded places in the city were the makeshift animal markets, especially at the Eidgah ground and its adjacent areas in the old City.

The other main attractions were on bakery products. Cakes, pastries, cookies and biscuits sold like hot cakes. Some of the better known bakery shops in Srinagar had taken orders as long as a month back.

The City including the business hub Lal Chowk witnessed a traffic mess again today with hundreds of vehicles stranded on the roads throughout the day.

The traffic cops including the volunteers who were assisting them to regulate the traffic on roads here had also a tough time in regulating the flow of vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh and the Council of Ministers have felicitated the people of Kashmir on Eid-ul-Adha.

They also prayed for the peace and progress of the state on this auspicious occasion.

However, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have appealed people to celebrate the Eid with simplicity and austerity in view of the current situation in the Valley.
