Over weight bags : Committee constituted to suggest measures

The School Education Department (SE), has constituted a five member committee to suggest measures for reduction of weight in bags of school going children.

The committee was constituted following the directions of High Court to education Department for taking measures to reduce the weight of school bags carried by kindergarten students.

The committee includes Secretary JK Board of School Education (BISE),  Prof. Veena Pandita, Prof. A.G. Madhosh former Head of the commerce department University of Kashmir,  Prof Nusrat Andrabi Ex-Principal and Member of Indian Red Cross Society and  Prof. Abdul Jabbar (Retd.) Ex-Principal Govt. Degree College Bemina.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of an expert Committee comprising following members having expertise in the field, who shall suggest possible measures to help reduce the weight of schools-bags of school-going children ,” reads an order issued by secretary school education Department, Faraq Ahmad Shah.

It reads that the committee shall be serviced by the JK BOSE and will submit its report to the government within a period of one month.

It is pertinent to mention that the issue of heavy bags carried by school children came into lime light after students and parents complained that private schools were prescribing unnecessary books for students.

The students had complained that they had to carry all these additional books to their school on daily basis causing inconveniences to them. Doctors had also apprehended of lumber problems in students carrying heavy school bags.

Also, the directorate of school education Kashmir issued a circular to all private schools asking them to review their time table for the students.

Meanwhile, secretary school education Department Farooq Ahmad Shah said the Department wants to make all the students comfortable by reducing weight in their school bags.

“It is era of modern education and student should be comfortable. We are trying to find all ways and means to reduce the weight,” Shah said.

He said government will consider the committee report on the issue and innovative measures will be taken to reduce weight in school bags,” he said.
