Two policemen, including the Station House Officer (SHO), were allegedly thrashed on Friday evening by the army near Deputy Commissioner’s Office in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, reports said.

Reports said that Shabir Ahmad ‘Munshi’ was beaten severely. He was later taken to sub district hospital in Kupwara for specialized treatment.

The army personnel, they said, even loaded their guns but the SHO, Tariq Ahmad, covered the ‘Munshi’ and asked them to shoot him first. Later better sense prevailed and the army men retrieved.

When contacted SSP Kupwara Samsher Hussain said that there was a scuffle and “all officers are on the spot to review the situation.”

He said that army had seized the vehicle of a local civilian and the Munshi had gone there to get his vehicle released. However, the army didn’t release the vehicle which resulted in a minor altercation between the Munshi and the army men. The matter was later resolved amicably, he said.

SSP Shamsher also said that Army officials have also apologized for the behavior of the army personnel who were involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, this is the second incident in less than a month after several policemen, including an officer, were injured when soldiers of 24 Rashtriya Rifles entered into a police station at Gund Ganderbal in central Kashmir and thrashed them.
