Restrictions put brakes on normal life in Old City
Authorities on Monday imposed restrictions in parts of Old City Srinagar to thwart any protests against the killings of two civilians in forces’ action on protesters during clashes in Shopian and Pulwama district yesterday.
Pertinently, the administration had announced that restrictions will be imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal police stations.
The decision to impose restrictions, according to the district administration was taken in wake of the situation that has developed after the killing of three Hizb militants including the operational commander Yasin Itoo in a gunfight with government forces in Awneera Shopian on Sunday. Two army men and two civilians were also killed in forces’ action on protesters after the gunfight ended.
In South Kashmir restrictions have been imposed to prevent any possible protests after the Sundays killings. The situation has turned tense in South Kashmir after the militant and civilian killings, reports said.
All business establishments, educational institutions have been closed as a precautionary measure.
Notably, all educational institutions across the Valley were also closed for the day. Director School Education Kashmir Dr. G N Itoo said “the decision to close down all educational institutions from Primary upto Higher Secondary schools has been taken as a precautionary measure.
According to District Magistrate Ganderbal class work shall remain suspended in Govt Degree College Ganderbal and Degree College Kangan tomorrow on 14 August 2017.
“Teaching activity will remain suspended in Islamia College, Amarsingh College Gandhi College, SP school and MP school tomorrow,” said Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone.
Meanwhile, the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Awantipora and University of Kashmir also suspended all class work and examinations scheduled for Monday.
