Massive protest rock Shopian, Pulwama villages

At least twelve persons were injured when government forces opened fire and resorted to pellet firing in Shopian district after an encounter ended that left Hizbul operational chief and two of his associates dead.

Eyewitnesses said that one of the youth was hit by a bullet and another was hit by pellets in his eye.

“Intense clashes erupted around the encounter site and many civilians were injured,” witnesses added.

Block Medical Officer (BMO), Zainpora PHC, Dr AG Raina said that twelve civilians with injuries were brought to the health facility.

“One youth was hit by a bullet in right his leg while as another youth was hit by pellets in his eye. Both have been shifted to Srinagar hospitals for advanced treatment,” he said.

The youth who received pellet injury has been identified as Junaid Maqbool Mir son of Mohammad Maqbool Mir resident of Rakh litter.  He is at present pursuing B. tech outside state, however, he had come to his home on holidays. 

Reports said that forces resorted to aerial firing as they were leaving the encounter site. “Clashes were going in Baopora area,” a local said.

Meanwhile, clashes erupted between government forces and protesters in Pulwama town, sources said.

Sources said youth who were protesting against the killing of thee militants in Shopian district, pelted stones on forces who retaliated with tear smoke shells triggering clashes.

Clashes were going on in various Pulwama parts till late evening, reports said.
