A class 4th student was ruthlessly beaten by teachers at the Government Middle School Shuplin in Khag area of Budgam district.

The development comes at a time when the government has banned corporal punishment to the students in their respective schools.

The students identified as Nazima Rashid daughter of Nazir Ahmad Dar was on Thursday beaten by her school teachers causing injuries to her.

“She is a minor but the teacher didn’t use his mind while dealing with a girl who is blow 12 years of age,” said a local.

The school has been setup in this particular area to make education facilities accessible to under privileged people living here.

“People living here in locality belong to the schedule tribe (CT), category and live in a Gujjar area. Government had setup this school to provide education facilities to poor who cannot afford to go to far off places,” the residents said.

Aghast with the move, the residents from the nearby village on Friday staged a massive protest outside the school against the beating of the girl student. The residents locked down the school in protest and asked the students to go back to their homes.

“Following the protest, class work was suspended in the school and residents demanded action against the school teacher,” said one of residents who was also protesting outside the school.

The teachers demanded shifting of teacher from the school.

“We will continue our protests unless the teacher is removed from the school,” the angry residents said.

Zonal Education Officer Khag said they have also received some complaints from the parents regarding the issue.

“We are investigating the matter. Action will be taken accordingly after investigation are completed,” the ZEO said.

This was the second incident of corporal punishment that surfaced during the last two days in the Valley.

On Thursday a parent complained that his kid was ruthlessly beaten in a preparatory school located in Bemina area of Srinagar city. The child was slapped on face resulting in bruises on her cheeks.

Interestingly, incidents of corporal punishment and harassment to students are reported at a time when Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has a separate wing set up in its office to deal with such issue.

However, ironically, no action has been reported from past many years against the teachers involved in corporal punishment and harassment of students.
