Students vent ire against KU officials, allege lackadaisical approach of officials

Various college students- 1st year (second semester) on Wednesday staged a massive protest in Srinagar against Kashmir University officials for framing “out of syllabus” question paper.

The students from Women’s’ college, Amar Singh College and Gandhi College took a procession towards Press Enclave and staged protest against Kashmir University (KU) and their college authorities for framing out of syllabus question paper in their ongoing 2nd semester exams under choice based credit system.

Chanting slogans against KU, the students said the varsity authorities have marred their career by framing out of syllabus papers.

“KU authorities are hell bent to ruin our career. Same mistake was committed by KU in previous papers as well. Despite our protests, there was no improvement in forthcoming exams. It is sheer injustice with us,” the students said.

The students who appeared in Urdu (M.I.L) paper said all questions including 40 objective type (32 marks) and descriptive type questions were out of syllabus, leaving students in a state of shock.

“We had to return blank paper as we couldn’t attempt any question asked in the exam,” the agitated students said.

As per the paper pattern the students had to attempt 40 objectives, four question (three marks each) in very short answer type, two questions (nine marks each) in medium type and one question of 12 marks in long answer type questions. “But not a single question was as per the prescribed syllabus,” the students said.

Chanting slogans, the protesting students including girls marched on Residency road towards clock tower and tried to stage a sit in protest, disrupting traffic movement on the busy road.

However, JK police deployed to maintain law and order disallowed the students to block the road near clock tower. The students further moved towards palladium lane and blocked the traffic movement for almost half an hour.

“Earlier, Political Science, English, Education question papers were also out of syllabus in arts stream while Chemistry and Zoology in medical stream. The authorities have made mockery of exams,” the students said.

The students were chanting slogans “Barbaad kiya Barbaad kiya, Hamara future barbad kiya”,“Majboor kiya Majboor Kiya, Rasstey pe aane pe Majboor Kiya”, “We want Justice.”

The students later marched towards Budshah road and blocked traffic movement for hours. The students were demanding on spot redressal of their grievance by the education minister.

“We won’t end our protest unless the education minister will come here and listen to or grievance. KU has adopted a callous approach in conducting our exams,” the students said.

The student protests continued for hours which halted the traffic movement causing inconveniences to the public.

Even if JK Police headed by Superintendent of Police west (City) tried to persuade the students to end their protest, the latter showed reluctance demanding “on spot resolution of their grievance.”

As the students showed reluctance to end the protests, JK Police cane charged the students to disperse them. Similar protests were also held by students in Baramulla as well.

Following massive student protests against out of syllabus paper, the authorities in Kashmir University have decided to conduct the exams for Urdu subject of Ist year (2nd semester) students afresh.

Officials in Kashmir University said the varsity has cancelled exams of Urdu paper and will conduct it afresh.

“We have also initiated an inquiry into this issue and till inquiry gets completed, we have decided to conduct the exams for Urdu paper afresh,” the official said.
