10 killed, 15 injured after vehicle falls in a gorge

At least ten persons died including a three month old baby and fifteen others suffered injuries when a vehicle carrying the passengers skidded off the road and rolled down a ravine in Reasi district of Jammu on Wednesday.

According to the reports, a Tempo Traveller bearing registration number JK02AT-0730 skidded off the road near Chachi Nullah in Jamsalam village resulting in the on spot death of seven people. Three of the critically injured later died at a hospital.

Police sources said that one person was feared to have been drowned in the nallah. The injured were later airlifted to Jammu for specialized treatment.

“The driver lost the control of the vehicle near Chachi nullah and it skidded off the road carrying around 14 passengers,” a police official said.

All the passengers were residents of Mahore sub-division. The vehicle had left Budhan around 8am, he added.

According to the police, those killed have been identified as Javed Ahmed, 26, son of Abdul  Rashid, Wazira Begum, 35, wife of Mohammad Sharief of Jamslan Mahore, Charan Singh, 22, son of Faquir Chand of Buddan, Liquat Ali, 20, son of Abdul Hamid of Buddan, Mohammad Ashraf, 19, son of Abdul Rashid of same village, Mohammad Asif, 14 son of Ali Mohammadd of Jamslan Mahore, Jamat Ali son of Manzoor Ahmed of Jamslan Mahore, Mubbashar Ahmed, 05 , son of Bahadur Din of Sildhar, Bahardin, 27, son of Abdul Gani of Sildhar and a three months male baby of Mohinder Singh. 

Meanwhile, police said that initially the locals helped the police in evacuating the injured and the dead from the vehicle and later army’s help was also sought to evacuate the injured persons.

The police blame the narrow roads in the area for the mishap. “The cause will be known during the course of the investigation,” a police officer said, however, he said that bad roads are the main reason for road mishaps in the area.
