Pulwama gunfight leaves LeT militant dead, says Police

A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), militant was killed in an encounter with government forces at Samboora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district late night on Sunday.

“Following a tip off about the presence of some suspected militants, a joint team of Army’s 50 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Akram Dar Mohalla, Samboora, Pulwama”, a police spokesman said here.

“As such the joint team intensified the search operation, the militants believed to be three in number opened fire triggering off an encounter,” he said,

During the encounter, one Pakistani militant of Abu Ismail group of LeT outfit identified as Umar was killed. Two militants escaped from the encounter site, one among them was injured. One AK 47 rifle was seized from the encounter site, the spokesman added.

He said that the role of Umar in different crimes perpetrated by Abu Ismail group is being ascertained.

Pertinently, as the encounter was going on scores of youth assembled in the nearby areas and started pelting stones on the government forces as the people, mostly youth tried to disrupt the operation.

Police and para-military CRPF in retaliation used teargas shells to disperse the protesters, a police official said.

Reports said that in the wake of the gunfight, authorities blocked the internet services in Pulwama as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the Southern district.
