Civilian, militant killed in Bijbehara shootout

Police on Friday said that a civilian and a Hizbul militant were killed last night in a cross firing incident at Kanelwan area of Anantnag district in South Kashmir. Sources said that the slain militant had joined militant ranks just ten days back. While as the slain civilian was passing through the area as the gunfight ensued. 

“On a specific input about the presence of three militant in general area of Herpora Kanelwan Karvel Anantnag an operation was launched by police, 3 RR and CRPF 40/90 Batalion,” police said in a statement.

It said that the operation was started after militants opened fire on the patrolling party on Thursday evening.

“Forces had laid siege in the area after inputs about the presence of militants in the area. Soon after the area was cordoned, militants opened fire, triggering an encounter,” an official said. He said that in the ensuing encounter a militant and another person died.

“The slain militants has been identified as Yawar Ahmad resident of Sherpora locality of Janglat Mandi in Anantnag Town. He had joined Militant ranks only ten days ago,” police said.

One SLR, 2 magazines, 40 rounds, one Chinese hand grenade and a pouch was recovered from the slain militant, police said adding one solider of 3 RR namely Rifleman Rohit Kumar No. 13771129K also sustained injuries

During search operation, police said that militants fired on the search party resulting in exchange of fire.

“At around midnight taking advantage of darkness two terrorists fired and managed to give a slip,” police said adding “Cut off party of Army retaliated fire.”

“Later on, it was learnt one individual riding a motorcycle Yamaha Libero (JK13-527?) with erased last numeral got killed in cross firing. No material leading to his identity or I-card could be retrieved. Two mobile phones (Nokia 1209) and Jivi-N300 were seized from the said individual,” police said.

Police later admitted that the second person to have been killed during the gunfight was a civilian who was identified as Ghulam Mohiuddin, of Anantnag.

Meanwhile, Yawar was laid to rest amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans on Friday.

Thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of slain militant. The funeral prayers for the slain militant were held at Hanfia Eidgah, Janglat Mandi.

Yawar was the first militant from the town in more than a decade. He had joined militant ranks just ten days back.

Yawar was laid to rest with at his ancestral graveyard near Achabal Adda in Islamabad (Anantnag) in Southern Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the civilian Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat son of Mohammad Yusuf Bhat of Arwani Bijbehara area was also laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Arwani village.

Ghulam Mohi-ud-din a labour by profession is father of three children, sources said.

Thousands of people who had come from different areas participated in his funeral prayers.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in south Kashmir against the militant and civilian killing. (with inputs from Jehangir Ganaie)
