Pulwama protests after sudden death of a girl, locals allege molestation

Police had to resort to tear gas shelling after hundreds of protesters staged a protest at Ratnipora village in Pulwama district. The residents alleged that the teenage girl died under mysterious circumstances at her home after she came back from a local bank where she had gone for some work.

Insha Bashir, daughter of Bashir Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Kharbhatpora area of Ratnipora died at her home after she returned from a local bank located in her village.

The relatives of the deceased said that after returning from the bank her health conditions deteriorated and she started vomiting.

“We immediately rushed her to district hospital Pulwama,” said a neighbor. He said that a bank employee at the bank branch attempted to molest her.

“When she resisted the molestation bid the bank employee kicked her,” Amir, a neighbour of the deceased said.

Doctors at the district hospital Pulwama said that the girl had died on way to the hospital.

The Manager of the Bank, Ashiq Hussain feigned ignorance about the matter.

“The incident happened outside the bank branch,” he said, adding that he can’t say what happened.

Senior superintendent of police Pulwama, Mohammad Aslam Chowdhry said that he has sent a team to the spot to investigate the matter.

The police official said that locals have alleged that the girl was allegedly molested. “We have taken the accused into police custody, he said, adding that there are allegations of molestation against the accused.

“The allegations are matter of investigation, my team is investigating the case,” he said.
