Two day ‘Women and Leadership’ conference begins at KU

Srinagar: A two-day conference titled ‘Women and Leadership’ began at the University of Kashmir on Monday.

The national-level conference, organized by University’s Women’s Studies Center in collaboration with All India Women’s Conference (AIWC) New Delhi, was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi. This is for the first time since the foundation of AIWC in 1927 that it has organised a conference in Kashmir.

“It is heartening to know that in its recorded history of 90 years, the AIWC decided to hold a conference in Kashmir and chose our University as its venue,” said Prof Andrabi.

He said such conferences provide an opportunity for meaningful deliberations and “I hope the benefits of this conference would percolate down to grassroots for the overall benefit of society in general and women in particular.”

In her address, President AIWC Rakesh Dhawan said: “For the past many years, we have been dreaming of organising one AIWC conference in Kashmir and our dream finally got fulfilled today.”

She said the AIWC is looking forward to valuable inputs and suggestions from various delegates and participants.

Chairperson J&K State Social Welfare Board, Prof Nirmal Gupta, appreciated the role of AIWC in highlighting women’s rights and issues. “I have been hearing about this conference for the last more than two decades and always desired to be a part of it.”

In her welcome address, Dean College Development Council and Coordinator Women’s Studies Centre at KU, Prof Nilofar Khan, expressed gratitude to organisers of AIWC for choosing KU as venue for the conference.

Kalyani Raj, Secretary General of AIWC, presented vote of thanks while Treasurer AIWC Dr Manju Kak was also present on the occasion. Earlier, Dr Roshan Ara Research Associate Women`s Studies Centre introduced the theme of the conference.
