Kashmir observes Martyrs’ Day; restrictions in Srinagar

Restrictions have been imposed by authorities today in Srinagar ahead of a march planned by the Joint Resistance Leadership to commemmorate July 13 as ‘Youm Tajdeed Ahad’ (renewal of pledge).

All shops and business establishments are closed in Srinagar and other towns of the valley.

Curfew-like restrictions are in place in parts of Downtown Srinagar to prevent protests.

Mobile and internet services have also been blocked across the Valley.

Resistance leadership said that to pay homage to the martyrs of July 13, 1931, a rally will be held at martyrs graveyard Naqshbanad sahib after Zuhr prayers.

Geelani according to the statement would lead a rally from Hyderpora, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from Jama Masjid Srinagar and Mohammad Yasiin Malik from Maisuma.

They said a complete shutdown will be observed to mark the day.

Pertinently, on July 13 1931, 21 protestors were killed in firing by Dogra Army outside Srinagar Central Jail.

The legacy of July 13 martyrs incident is claimed by both the mainstream political parties of the Valley and the separatist groups.

In her message on the occasion of 86th Martyrs Day, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the brave hearts of 1931 sacrificed their lives for laying a strong edifice of democracy, equality and liberty in the State which ought to be safeguarded, respected and protected by every citizen.
