Youth tortured, shifted to Srinagar

A youth was critically injured after Army allegedly tortured him in custody in Tral area of Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Sunday. The incident came a day after forces sealed the township to prevent the anti-India protests.

Sheikh Murtaza, 29, according to his family members, was called to 42 RR camp in Nader village of Tral to collect his identity card taken away by army following stone-pelting protest in Kuchmulla village. “Army took away identity cards of several youth following a minor stone-pelting protest in the village. The youth were asked to collect the IDs from the 42 RR camp,” said a family member, requesting anonymity for fear of reprisal. “After Murtaza went there to collect his ID, he was tortured inside the camp,” he said.

Murtaza was shifted to Sub-district hospital Tral for treatment where from he was referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment.His condition, according to health officials, was serious.

Human rights activists have condemened the incident. Noted human rights activist, Ehsan Untoo, said that the incident was condemnable. On Saturday Authorities had placed curfew to prevent pro-freedom protests in Tral, the town of slain HM commander, Burhan Muzafar Wani.   Authorities  sealed Tral, the native town of another Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander, Sabzar Bhat.

Ahead of the militant commander, Burhan Muzafar Wani’s, death anniversary Tral town was completely sealed with Army conducting flag march in restive parts of the town, warning people not to venture out from their houses.

As per eyewitnesses and reports  the town reeled under strict curfew on Friday while hundreds of government forces personnel including army men from Rashtriya Rifles had been deployed on the village roads. Locals alleged that pedestrians at many places were thrashed by government forces personnel for venturing out from their houses. Troopers were deployedd at Dadsara, Pinglish, Lurgam, Batagund and Rathsuna villages of the town which were  turned into military garrisons.

As per reports Sharifabad, the native village of Hizbul Mujhadeen commander Burhan Wani, was  sealed while the “martyrs grave yard and Eidgah where Wani’s funeral prayers was also  sealed.’’

“The government forces have been patrolling in every nook and cranny of the town. The unprecedented security measures taken by the PDP-BJP led government has created a sense of insecurity among people,” said a local.

Like in Jamia Masji Srinagar, no Friday prayers were allowed in Khanqah Faiz Panah in Tral.

On Friday, stone-pelting incidents took place in different parts of Kashmir Valley. Clashes broke out between protesters and the government forces in Anantnag, Bandipora, Pulwama and some parts of Srinagar city. Reports said that clashes broke out in Tahab Pulwama, Noor Bagh, Kawdara and Batamaloo Srinagar, Garoora Bandipora, and Anantnag.
