The Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) has miserably failed to remove the material dumped during the period of Eid-ul-Fitr in Dal Lake here thereby posing a threat to the aquatic life of the water body.

A delegation of locals living in Meena Bazar in Dal Lake told ‘Kashmir Vision’ on Friday that the water body was under continuous threat and there were chances of it shrinking further.

“Almost two weeks have passed since the Eid-ul-Fitr and a huge rush of visitors was witnessed around the Dal lake, the LAWDA has miserably failed to clean the Lake and to save it from getting polluted,” they said.

Reports said that the surroundings of Nehru Park area is totally engulfed with the disposal that include juice bottles, tin, wrappers and waste food.

The Shikarawala’s at Dal Lake have also expressed their anguish over the ‘callous approach’ of the department in dealing with the problem.

“It is not for the first time but it has now become a trend here. The authorities are showing non-serious attitude in clearing the disposal from the Dal Lake, which is posing a threat to the aquatic life,” said a Shikarawala stationed at Ghat No. 15 who seeks anonymity.

“There was a huge rush of visitors that include locals as well as outsiders. The visitors dumped the disposal in Dal Lake,” he said.

Informing about the aquatic life, the Shikarawala said: “If this disposal is not removed at the earliest, it may cause damage to all the fishes here.”

40 year old Meenakshi, a tourist from Mumbai said that she was also puzzled to see the deteriorating condition of the Dal Lake.

“I came to Srinagar immediately after the Eid-ul-Fitr and was astonished to see the disposal dumped around Nehru Park. It is unfortunate that authorities are yet to sanitize it which might irritate the onlookers,” she said.

Despite repeated attempts, no official from LAWDA could be contacted for the comments.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Lone said that he will look into the matter.

“I will talk to the VC LAWDA and will ensure that the Dal Lake is sanitized at the earliest,” the DC said.
