Earlier the joint resistance leaders called for a week-long protest programme to mark the first death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani, whose death  last year had plunged the restive region of Kahmir into unprecedented public unrest.

The programme includes a complete shutdown on July 8, the day the militant leader was killed last year, and July 13 when 22 Kashmiris died during protests against the regime of Maharaja Hari Singh in Srinagar in 1931. More than 100 people lost their lives in the clashes “with security forces after Wani’s death.’’

The protest call came from separatist leaders including  Syed Ali Shah Geelani,  Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF leader Yasin Malik and more.

On Friday government blocked the internet and broadband services in the Kashmir Valley and imposed curfew-like restrictions “in parts of Srinagar city as separatists called for protests marking the death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.’’

Wani was killed last year in a gunfight with security forces in Anantnag district’s Kokernag area. A 54-days unrest followed Wani’s death in which 94 civilian protesters were killed and over 200 others injured.

All senior separatist leaders have been either detained or placed under house arrest to prevent their participation in the Valley-wide protests.

For Saturday District Magistrate Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone issued orders to impose restrictions in areas falling under the jurisdictions of five -Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Khanyar, Safa Kadal – police stations in the city. The order read that restrictions shall “not be applicable to accredited and registered media persons exclusively performing their professional duties.’’

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Munir Ahmad Khan, ordered the suspension of internet facility both “on mobile phones and fixed landline broadband connections for an indefinite period of time.’’

“Restrictions on movement of public and transport under Sec 144 CrPC will remain in force in all police station areas of district Srinagar tomorrow July 8,” said an official of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Srinagar.  However, as per the order the  essential services and government employees would be exempted from the restriction orders.

The curfew like restrictions would particularly remain in force in South Kashmir areas which have seen protests after the onset of militancy.
