Police on Saturday said that all the 17 civilians who were holed up with militants in a residential house in Dialgam area of Anantnag district have been rescued.

Earlier a standoff was going on after a cross-firing between government forces and militants in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said.

Police said that after rescuing all the civilians from the area, operation against the militants has been resumed.

As per reports Bashir Lashkari, a top militant commander is believed to be hiding in a house in Brenthi Batpora village of Anantnag. Lashkari is believed to have masterminded an ambush in Achabal area where six policemen including a Station House Officer (SHO) was killed last month.

A lady and a youth were killed earlier after they were hit by a bullet near the encounter site.

At least a dozen more civilians sustained injuries during clashes which started soon after forces started operation against the militants.
