Clashes erupt over civilian killings

Widespread clashes were reported from different parts of Kashmir in response to the call given by the Hurriyat leadership against the recent civilian killings in action by government forces.

Authorities imposed restrictions in some areas in Srinagar as separatists had announced post Friday  protests in the Valley. 

“Restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed to maintain law and order in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Safakadal and Maisuma police stations,” a senior police officer said.  “Under the curbs, there can be no gathering of five or more people at any place,’’ he said.

The separatists have called for protests after the Friday prayers against the killing of a civilian, Touseef Ahmad Wani, 22, in Kakapora in Pulwama district in firing by government forces on Thursday. Police said Wani was killed when a mob attacked the Kakapora police post on Thursday after three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in the area by the forces.

June 23 is the last Friday of the holy Muslim month of Ramadhan.  In response to the protest call given by joint resistance leadership against the killing of a civilian in forces’ firing protests erupted in parts of Anantnag of South Kashmir, Hajin, Sopore town of north Kashmir.

During the clashes youth pelted stones on paramilitary troopers. At least 7 people have sustained injuries during the ongoing clashes which included a 9 year old girl. The girl has been identified as Moharram.

Sources said that several others were injured in the clashes. Those injured have been identified as Aariz Ahmed Resident of Dangarpora, Muneeb Ahmed R/o Nai Basti, Aijaz Ahmed R/o Kanelwan, Irfan R/o Larkipora, Mohammed Sahil R/o Bijnore, U.P, Darshan R/o Nepal.

A CRPF personnel identified as Papu Singh was also injured during the clashes.

In Sopore ,witnesses said, scores of youth took to streets and staged protests against the killing of a civilian in forces” firing in Kakapora area of Pulwama district yesterday. As youth tried to march towards main chowk from Jamia Masjid area, police and paramilitary personnel lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them. The youth pelted stones in return, triggering ding-dong battles between the two sides.

In Hajin, reports said, as soon as congregational Friday prayers culminated youths assembled in main chowk, Hajin and held a protest rally. Reports said forces resorted to teargas shelling after youth hurled stones at them near Hajin Chowk, triggering clashes.  A complete shutdown was observed today in Pulwama district of south Kashmir to mourn the death of three militants in an encounter and the killing of a civilian in forces’ action on protesters yesterday.

Reports said that all shops and other business establishments remained closed in the district while traffic was off the roads.  A group of miscreants tried to set ablaze a guard post in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, but were chased away by on-duty police personnel, official sources said.  They said a group of miscreants pelted stones at a police guard in court Complex of Pulwama, late last night. ”The miscreants then tried to set on fire the guard post.’’

Clashes erupted after Friday prayers between government forces and youth in Tahab village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district after youth staged protests against Kakapora killings. Youth took to streets and started pelting stones on government forces who retaliated with tear smoke shells triggering clashes.
