The dhabas, around about 15 of them, that dot the Hamzapora Sangam to Bijbehara area in Anantnag district have become a hub of drug menace.

The dhabas owners are locals but the workers are from Punjab and other parts of India.

Locals have appealed to Jammu Kashmir Police to initiate action against drug peddlers, who according to them sell brown sugar and other drugs to youth in broad day light.

However, not much attention has been given to this issue as of now.

Locals say that Tulkhan Bijbehara village is the main centre of drug smuggling. “Youth from different parts of Kashmir mostly from Srinagar city visit this village daily to procure brown sugar from the dhaba owners.

“It is shameful that the dhaba owners are ruining the lives of the youth by selling drugs to them. They sell drugs to tourists as well.”

Drug peddlers who run operations from the two dhabas – one near Green Tunnel at Dhoonipora and the other at Hamzahpora fall under the jurisdiction of Sangam police chowki – are a source of nuisance.

“Earlier a police officer had initiated action against these dhaba owners. Liquor bottles were seized in huge quantity but this didn’t stop them from indulging in drug trade.”

The locals said, “We request authorities to look into the matter and if they need proof, we are ready to provide them the same.”

A police official said that they had raided these dhabas in past but found nothing. “Police is for the protection of people and we will surely go into the depth of the matter. All involved won’t be spared.”
