Medicos protest as cop turns ‘hooligan’, beats doc at SMHS
A resident doctor was ruthlessly beaten up by a cop that triggered widespread protests at the SMHS. The medicos also struck work paralyzing the hospital care.
Owais Wani was beaten to pulp by a police officer and his personal security guards on Tuesday night at SMHS, in a brazen high handedness by the police. The senior police official failed to take action as doctors have threatened to intensify their agitation to protest against the “ hooliganism’’.
The police officer was identified as Isaac, former SHO Police Station Karan Nagar and is currently stationed at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh.
Giving details about the incident, Owais, who was being treated for the injuries, said that “a patient was admitted in the causality and as per routine I was on duty and attended to the patient.” “ The police man Issac kept coming to me and started pestering me and was interfering in my work. I had to attend to the other patients as well, and in spite of that I kept attending his patient,” apparently in shock, Owais said.
The things went nasty as the police officer informed the doctor that the patient’s Blood Pressure (BP) has gone down, and once again asked him to attend to the patient, “I went and reconfigured the machine, and checked BP of the patient, which turned out to be fine,” he said, adding that “I kept assuring him that the patient was fine and doing well.”
But at midnight, the doctor said that the police officer along with his five other police personnel came to his quarters and began beating him without any reason for about half an hour. The police as per the doctor have “refused” lodging an FIR into the matter.
Police says that the “officer beat the doctor because of negligence towards the patient, and the issue has been resolved amicably between the two parties.”
However, the victim doctor said that none of the officials came to meet him “The issue was not resolved, this is rubbish; even my complaint was thrown out,’’ said.
Following the incident the doctors and the students at GMC went for indefinite strike demanding action into the incident. “We are demanding action into the incident and for that we have decided to go for indefinite strike. Justice shall prevail,” said one of the protesting doctors.
When contacted Medical Superintendent SMHS, Dr. Nazir Chowdhary said that “we are investigating the matter. Appropriate action will be taken.”
When asked how the hospital is going to deal with the situation that may emerge out of the strike in the hospital, he said that “we are all set to deal with the situation, we have made proper arrangements for tomorrow.”
However, Principal GMC, Dr. Samia Rashid, who has directed the hospital administration not to talk to anyone regarding the issue, could not be contacted for her comments.
